Healthcare Reforms Discussion

Reforms in the American healthcare system has played a significant role in shifting the focus of health care from disease-oriented to wellness and preventive system of care. Previously, care provision was characterized by disease treatment only, and no concerned was on how the diseases could be prevented from happening in the first place. One of the reforms was the decentralization of healthcare services. Care providers are now found in the communities to drive programs to prevent disease through education and empowerment of the public (Heirich, 2019). Creation of a safe and healthy community environment is another reform that enabled the wellness and prevention programs to be successful. There are policies that require the communities to be free from water, air and land pollution. As a result, there is minimal exposure of the public to health hazards that causes disease. Introduction of community health workers in the healthcare system also played an essential role to drive preventive programs such as immunization and screening for conditions through health education and empowerment of the public (Thompson & Nichter, 2016). This has resulted in increased capacity of the public to care for themselves through disease prevention.

Reforms in healthcare are dynamic and not static. Other ways of promoting wellness and prevention system of care through healthcare reforms include the reduction of health disparities. It involves the provision of affordable and accessible care services for optimum utilization of preventive services (Thompson & Nichter, 2016). Diversification of the health insurance programs is an example of health reform that aims at making insurance premiums are affordable to all Americans regardless of the level of income and another social status.

Nurses play a significant role in facilitating the shift of healthcare approach. One of the roles includes education of individuals, families and communities on better ways of living to avoid incidences of disease. Nurses also take part in the formulation and implementation of policies tailored to meet the preventive needs of the patients (Smolowitz et al., 2015) Finally, nurses are tasked with the responsibilities of evaluating the effectiveness of the health reforms and suggest the necessary adjustment in case needs arise.
